Vehicles & Technology

From the very beginning we have put our trust in the reliable technology of the Yamaha Single Cylinder Enduros. The Yamaha XT 600 perfectly matched our requirements. We did however have to modify the motorcycles slightly, to accommodate the specific requirements for a Namibian terrain: stronger suspension, spoke and rim reinforcements as well as special air filters. The result is that we haven't had a single technical problem that could not be fixed locally.

In the past two years we completely replaced and modified our entire fleet. This means that we now only use our modified TT 600 RE for the Kaokoland tours. We have found that the TT 600 RE's are much better suited for the rougher terrains than the XT's. They are also somewhat lighter and more manoeuvrable, have better suspension and a stronger engine.

We use the slightly modified XT 660 and the new Yamaha XTZ 660 Ténéré for all other tours (Classic, Windhoek-Cape Town, Special, etc.) where we ride mainly on gravel roads. We have found that due to their even-tempered and yet powerful engine character, the water-cooled single cylinders are incredibly easy to ride. The fuel injection system also makes their fuel consumption extremely economical. The XT 660's fuel consumption is roughly 4ltrs per 100km.

Most of our required accessories such as crashbars, engine covers, baggage carriers, road book holders, etc. are manufactured for us by Touratech.

In the last few years we have started using a Garmin GPS (pre-programmed for each individual tour) in addition to the roadbook for all our Kaokoland tours. The combination of roadbook and GPS makes navigation simple and accurate and ensures that the experiences is enjoyable and safe even when traveling to the most remote parts of the Kaokoland or the concrete jungle of Cape Town. We use the Garmin GPS 60Cx with Touratech holders. Touratech QV software is used for GPS programming and preparation of roadbooks.

Our support vehicles consist of a Toyota Landcruiser HJ100, a Toyota Landcruiser HZJ76 4.2 l Diesel, a Landrover Defender 110 V8, a Landrover 130 Double Cab Diesel and a Toyota Condor 4x4. All vehicles have been equipped with a compressor, tools and spare-parts, a first-aid kit, drinks and for emergencies we also have an Iridium or Inmarsat satellite telephone which can be used in even the most remote parts of the country.

Service & Maintenance

Motorcycle tours on uneven terrain, dust, sand, heat and gravel road tend to put a lot of strain on the motorcycles. To ensure that our motorcycles function optimally and efficiently during the tours we always carry a very comprehensive spare parts kit and have ensured that a qualified Yamaha mechanic joins us on all the tours.

Airfilter- and chain service, general maintenance, tyre changes, repairs in case of an accident - we've got it covered. You are on holiday! In the rare case where we do require some assistance, we might ask you for some help.

General servicing and maintenance (general inspection, worn tyres and replacement of sprocket kits)also takes place in the workshop at the lodge. The Landrover and the Landcruiser also require some tlc from time to time.
